This movie is tough to watch make no mistake about that! Ofcourse, Gene Hackman says it all EXCELLENCE above all! While race mattered more in some paces than others states like Mississippi did not want change of the good old boys club (KKK) and were prepared to keep it that way against the FBI's presence! The extent to which this hatred and racism ran in the US of A is beyond comprehension ... yet, it is now part of their history. Can't say how many times I've watched this film, excellent script and top class acting. Images are sharper, more vivid, contrast is excellent, even in dark scenes (the scenes in the night), images look beautiful and sharp.
