If they abandoned the original story all together then that's just bad writing and should not have gave it the FLCL name and rebadged it or renamed it as a spin-off
Look, I have watched the original (see my review) and I enjoyed this as well.
Vanilla, plain. FLCL (2001) is an OVA anime series written by Yōji Enokido, directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki and animated by Gainax. FLCL was really good but everything about the way the new ones looked seemed like a different thing entirely. This whole Quentin Tarantino approach to chopping up the story line and somehow making it make sense did not work.

I had high hopes for a sequel because of how Diebuster (sequel to Gunbuster) was handled and I expected maybe the same or less level of quality. I'm happy they kept the old actress of Haruko, but the other characters that are introduced are dull except for Jinyu. FLCL was really good but everything about the way the new ones looked seemed like a different thing entirely.
Didn't even watch Alternative, but god I hated Progressive. FLCL Progressive and Alternative are sequels to the original, staffed with a new team of creators with various episodes done by various people and studios, and both funded by Toonami. If the stories are linear too much time has passed with unanswered questions to the original fans of FLCL. sheit, wrong thread :p. to save this post, i will share this gif

The kicking soundtrack in all three is powered by Japanese rock band The Pillows. Unfortunately, this sequel of a personally beloved work has met my negative expectations. It felt too rigid with its story.
Compared to the original, the animation is incredibly disappointing, and in all honesty... every episode just feels like pedo bait on top of some more pedo bait... so in a nutshell, FLCL: Progressive is just your average, mediocre, completely forgettable anime series, just with a bunch of the original series' weirdness thrown into the mix), which FLCL really didn't deserve to turn into. FLCL gave us such a story and then left us hanging in the end, so when the progressive and alternative was announced we were all under the impression that Naota would return trying to express his pre adolescent love... but instead they abandoned that story line, even if there was any way to thread the two stories in a linear flow it just leaves us unsatisfied. To be fair they didn't really use any FLCL characters beyond Haruko, who is the soul of FLCL and so it's totally appropriate. Her life, and that of those around her are about to get strange when Haruko Haruhara returns to town on her Vespa.

The first FLCL is in my top favorite cartoons ever made list. Menu. Huh? Honestly, I thought FLCL Progressive is just as good as the original FLCL. The animation isn't as bad as people claimed it to be and I think it had aged pretty well from the original. Sure, Canti had a cameo if you want to count him.
It felt torn between telling it's own story, and trying to hit all of the same beats of the original. What they need to do is continue off where it left off and show us how things went to his adulthood... at least that way we can understand what progressives approach is.
