Clearly some horrible animal cruelty going on here*, but there is no doubt that the scene where White Fang fights a bear (/occasionally a man in a bear suit) is viscerally exciting, partially because of how it's shot and edited, but also because it's clearly got some real dog and bear action.
While Jack is re-taming White Fang (at 1:25:35), countless ATV tire tracks are seen underfoot, smoothing out the river sand, near his Dad's gold claim.
