Once upon a Time in Hollywood A harrowing and compellingly constructed chamber drama of police brutality and mental anguish, The Offence takes director Lumet's obsession with the policeman's conflicted position as his brother's keeper into the realms of the psychological thriller. That film was designed to be ambiguous, almost like a Chinese puzzle, but with "The Offence" we really do not have a protagonist as the film tries to give creditability by their very humaness, despicable traits so and the ambiguity never clarifies our doubts. I think this is down to a combination of the somewhat dated production values and the unrelenting nature of the narrative, whereby Connery's obsession with the guilt of a would-be child molester simply does not let up. He is utterly convincing as Sergeant Johnson the macho, hard-man, Detective , who is on the verge of a nervous breakdown as a result of his 20-odd years of digging amongst the dregs of humanity. A Bitter and angry cop takes out his frustration on a suspected child molester, but during the course of the interrogation of the suspect, the detective starts to examine his own personal demons, and when the suspect, ( brilliantly played by the underrated Ian Bannen ) touches on a nerve from the detective's own psychology, this sparks events that have very serious consequences for all concerned.
