The passing of the Representation of the People Act on February 6th 1918, giving women over 30 the vote, was a great victory but, in terms of female suffrage, it was a step in the wider story not the end of the journey. When she was interviewed by the Birmingham Post on the Strike’s 50th anniversary in 1976, Eden recalled the privations of the period: “1926 was a brave move but only a marker of what was to come. The General Stike lasted 9 days from 4th May to 13th May, and was an attempt to force the government to halt the wage cuts and worsening conditions for the 1.2 million locked out coal miners. She protested against the Vietnam war in the 1960s, remaining an active and much respected member of the party until senility struck in the late ’70s. Jessie initially went to the AEU (Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union) to ask them to represent her fellow women in this dispute but, whilst the AEU were the most populated and largely Communist union at Lucas’ at the time, they did not accept women as members. The irony was that the new working speeds intended as a result of new American-designed systems were to be based on Jessie’s work-rate as she was judged as an exemplar of efficiency. Eden became more and more of a public figure, contesting the 1945 General Election as a Communist Party candidate and becoming elected a councillor later in the year. Despite over a million people standing in solidarity and transport and heavy industry being particularly effected, the action proved unsuccessful thanks to a prepared government reaction and the enlisting of middle class volunteers to run essential services that had been affected by the industrial action.
In the episode, the Shelby women decided to show solidarity by joining the strike with the rest of Birmingham’s working women. The percentage of unionised women in the Lucas factory was tiny and completely over-shadowed by the 10,000 non-unionised women, nevertheless Eden marched the women in her section out. That the story continues is due to the women who continued (and continue) to fight for a female voice in all levels of political and social participation – one such woman was Birmingham trade union activist Jessie EdenEden’s name may be familiar due to her inclusion in the BBC’s 1920s gangster series The mid-twenties was a time of massive working class protest culminating in the 1926 General Strike. Note that this episode is set over the course of a Good Friday strike in the city in 1924, and yet Jessie Eden is not referred to as Jessie Shrimpton as she would have been at this stage in her life. Eden’s name may be familiar due to her inclusion in the BBC’s 1920s gangster series Peaky Blinders. But triumph proved to be short-lived; a 5,000 strong victory march the following day was broken up by Birmingham’s Chief Constable who was booed by the procession and arrests of known communists were made in attempts to stage a May Day rally. It eventually led to a mass movement towards unionisation amongst women.She joined the Communist Party during the strike and was sent by it to Moscow, with nobody knowing where she was for two years.She was sent to help rally Soviet women workers in the building of the Metro in Moscow.Back in Birmingham, she lived with fellow Communist Walter McCulloch, who she finally married in 1948.They lived at various times on Heathfield Road, Handsworth, Walsall Road, Perry Barr and Hob Moor Road, Yardley.Jessie was the Vice-President of the Central Tenants Association during the 1939 rent strike in Birmingham.She contested the August 1945 general election in Handsworth for the Communist Party and lost, but continued to be politically active – in 1969, she and Walter led a march in Birmingham against the Vietnam War.Walter died of lung cancer in 1977, Jessie in 1986 aged 84.When you subscribe we will use the information you provide to send you these newsletters.
